Yuck. Allow me to note that while spyware is always difficult to remove, it's even more difficult to help a mostly-computer-illiterate (she can make it run Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, Word, and that's about it) aunt remove it over the telephone.

Gator is insidious. It took down her entire Internet connection when we blocked it with Norton, and then vanished from the block list...

Gah. Let's all give a big "FUCK YOU" to whoever the asshole is who thought spyware was a reasonable idea.

One of my friends uses PC Anywhere to maintain her mother's computer...might be something to consider if you end up helping your aunt with her computer often.

Why not try AdAware? (www.adaware.com) It's a program which detects and removes SpyWare every time you use it. It's very nice, unless you have something like KaZaa. (It can remove the spyware which prevents KaZaa and stuff from working -- but then again, that's why you should get KaZaa Lite! No spyware!)

I hope that can help your situation with your aunt.

I use ZoneAlarm and it seems to work for most stuff. Once in awhile something gets through, though...
