RSS and related forms of compulsion

I have been repeatedly trying, with no success, to pare down my list of RSS feeds. It takes up entirely too much of my time to go through them, makes me late for untold things as I try to finish the queue, and produces this sick sense of obligation to get through them all. RSS is not personal e-mail; there's rarely an obligation hiding inside it somewhere. I'd rather spend less time on Google Reader so I can spend significantly more time on things I actually care about.

I need to get better at deciding that certain feeds really aren't valuable to me. I've tried to pare down my RSS list before, and rarely made more than a trivial amount of progress. Things I enjoy reading aren't necessarily things that it's worth my time to read, and I need to get a lot more aggressive with managing the trade-off.

I need to be down to under 80 news items per day, not over 500.
