Unfortunately, I Really Am That Nerdy

Perhaps this is why I can't play any of my online games and I've actually lost some Magic: The Gathering Online games due to time because of time spent waiting on lag running down my clock. Note especially hop 6. (Hop 1 is the router I use between my computer and laptop and is expected to refuse to answer ICMP ECHO requests.)

Tracing route to magicthegathering.com []
over a maximum of 30 hops:

I'm amused by the extreme appropriateness of that icon given the rather roundabout path that tracert seems to be indicating.

If I tracert from here to www.livejournal.com, part of the sequence of hops goes from Chicago to Germany to China to Australia to China to Australia to Germany to Switzerland to Ohio, which explains about 280 ms of the stunning 1,250 ms ping time on a bad day.

The ping to the Magic: The Gathering server is only 97ms from here in the UK; LiveJournal is around 158ms. How can your routing be configured so strangely?

...Why the hell does it go to China and Australia even once? I can almost see Germany and Switzerland, but why doesn't it just take a more direct path?

Also, how do you get tracert to work? I run it, and it insta-closes.

Open the command window before running it - run "cmd" (or run "command" on old OSes) should work on most Windows computers, as opposed to run "tracert X" which is what you're probably doing.

Start - Run - "cmd" - OK. Should pop the window with a C: prompt. tracert from there.

tracert is a command-line application. Open up the Command Prompt from Start/Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt (under Windows XP). At the prompt, type tracert by itself for a short instruction page, or tracert [web address] to run a traceroute, where [web address] is replaced with a web site, such as www.livejournal.com or www.magicthegathering.com. Do NOT include an http:// at the start, because this is a routing request, not a hypertext transfer protocol request!

You and Inuki are made of win! Thanks!

... The school's routing is very broken. I'm fairly certain I don't make so circuitous a route in going there, seeing as I don't recognize any obvious international routers and a ping has an average time of 68ms.
