Mario Makin'

I've been playing Mario Maker for a while.

In a way, I've been playing it for longer than it's been released; I was an avid (if not skilled) level designer on the high-quality rip-off of Mario that was written for the TI-86, back in high school. So Mario Maker was fantastic: it's the Nintendo-sanctioned version of something I've been fascinated by for over fifteen years. (I've always loved level editors.)

Nintendo has finally implemented a decent web service, too, so now I can share my levels! is the spot to look. I consider myself a reasonably skilled "conventional level" designer - most of my levels are similar to things Nintendo might actually make. I read a really awesome series deconstructing the design of Super Mario World and incorporated a lot of it into my level designs. (Sometimes I deviate from it, but frankly, those are the weaker levels.)

The best emotional experience I can have playing Mario Maker, though, is something I haven't captured well in my own levels - but I should try to design around it. Here's the experience I really enjoy:

"Mario. Mario. Hah, Mario Maker. Mario. Ha, clever, very Mario Maker! Mario. WHAT THE FUCK MARIO MAKER"
