color cycle (slow)

So on Monday, in addition to my TV tuner card, the other order that arrived was bookshelves for the third floor. More bookshelves, that is- to cover the one wall that wasn't already covered with books.

The challenge, of course, is getting 70 pounds of wood up a narrow staircase with sharp turns at its small landings. Surprisingly, this wasn't too bad and we in fact took three of the five sets of bookcase kits (Some Assembly Required, of course) up the stairs without incident, then got tired.

My father opened a box to start assembling the shelves and discovered they were of the wrong wood. I, personally, am too aesthetically ignorant to care, but I do have to agree that the cherry was far too dark for the house when everything else was made of oak.

No, the really hard part is getting the bookcases down the stairs.

We've only done one set, and we're trying to figure out how to do the other two. In trying to do the first one, we didn't drop it or lose control, but I've strained my back, pulled something in my left shoulder, have my neck in pain, and my tendonitis has both wrists in agony right now; my back is actually much worse than I've let on to my parents. (I'm whining about it here, though.) My father only now decided that it's a good idea to buy the proper sort of gadget to safely haul that sort of thing on stairs- a standard two-wheeled cart (not too bad on stairs) with straps (the critical thing)- after I've hurt myself fairly badly.

With the proper tools, I'll be having to try again tomorrow evening- just before the TopCoder Open Round 2. Let's hope I don't hurt my wrists badly enough to impact my performance there... making it to round 3, or winning another room prize, would be nice. For that matter, it would be nice if my back, neck, shoulders, arms, etc. felt better by then...
