In the lobby of the building my office is in, I noticed a man using a red-tipped white cane giving a man using a red-tipped white cane a tour of the building. And, I realized, he made sense as the ideal tour guide: he already knew the landmarks that would be relevant to someone not using visual senses.

With that, the phrase "the blind leading the blind" has just lost pretty much all of its traditional meaning for me.

That's pretty awesome.

Oh! That makes sense.

Most phrases of speech about handicaps turn out to be stupid like that.

Yes indeed. Some years back I ran into a guy I knew from high school music camp. He was blind from birth, but a brilliant musician and otherwise gifted too. Very smart guy.

So, 25 years later what was he doing? He was providing instruction to other people with visual handicaps on how to use public transportation in Chicago. He did both written guides (braille, large print, or audio) and actual live tours for small groups.
